Why do you need an SEO keyword strategy?
SEO is not just about building links, your on page SEO keyword density and how you use your ALT tags. Many just jump into building their site and trying to do their SEO but forget about the very basics. If no one is searching for what you are writing then you are not going to get any traffic and if there is too much competition then you are going to struggle to steal the traffic from that competition. Keywords and SEO are highly important to the success of your site and failing to have a proper SEO keyword strategy can lose you a huge amount of traffic. This article will help you to develop the right SEO keyword strategy for your site.
Search volume for organic SEO marketing
Some phrases and words are searched for more often than others and you can check these figures for yourself very simply by using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. Just log into your adwords account or sign up for a free account and look for the keyword planner under tools. You can then select “Search for new keyword and ad group ideas”.
Type in some words that are related to the subject that your site or page is to be written about and it will tell you how many people are searching for each of these words or phrases each month; for instance:
- SEO – 90, 500
- Keywords – 6,600
- Keyword Strategy – 170
- Keyword planning – 50
- Keywords for search engine optimization – 20
Not only will it tell you how many people search for each phrase it will also provide you with a lengthy list of other keywords that are related to the original keywords that you used along with their associated search volumes.
The google keyword tool is not the only place that you can get this information, nor is it always the most complete or accurate. You can also find similar information through Bing’s ad intelligence and also tools such as the SEO book keyword tool.
Competition for keyword search results
If you plug your various keywords into Google you will be able to see which sites and pages are already ranking for those specific keywords. Typically you will find that the keywords with the large search volumes are very competitive with many different pages in the index of the search engine. You will also notice that most of the time that the top places are taken by large and well established websites.
No idea how to find keywords for SEO? You’ll know how for sure when you read this!
For your SEO keyword strategy you will not want to be going head to head with these sites as you will not manage to knock them out of the top slots even if you have a better page; at least not at the start. It is far better to start looking at the keywords that have a smaller search volume but far less competition. It will be far easier to rank for these long tail keywords with less competition.
By ranking for many of these less trafficked keywords you will find that you will face far less competition as your competitors will often not be targeting all of them allowing you to start to see more and more traffic. You will find that as you start to rank for all of these keywords you will eventually start to also see traffic for the more competitive keywords with the larger volumes. However always remember that your SEO keyword strategy is not the only factor in gaining traffic, Google will look very much at user behavior so you have to ensure that the content that the user finds through the search engine is what they want to see so that they actually read it and take action.
SEO keyword strategy for ad campaigns
Directing traffic through paid ads is an effective way to gain traffic to your sales pages, however if you choose the highly trafficked and very competitive keywords you will find that the cost per click is very high. Again a strategy of choosing the less competitive keywords will reduce your costs but still drive traffic to your pages. However care should be taken to carefully consider how well specific keywords will convert to actual sales when buying traffic through an ad campaign.
