It is often best to target what are called the “long Tailed Keywords”. These are longer phrases that typically get far fewer searches but are not as well targeted by the main players so you may be able to rank more easily for them. Ranking for dozens of long tailed keywords can be just as effective in drawing traffic as ranking for a main keyword for a topic but will much easier to achieve.
